Bonbon is not a regular cat

Every morning, as I grope for my phone on the pillow without opening my eyes, 

Bonbon climbs onto my chest. With tiny paws, she kneads my shirt as if doing laundry, a silent plea for breakfast. 

I begin my day surrounded by the warmth and comforting scent of my precious cat, a peace that only those who share this bond can truly understand. 

Yet, the fleeting nature of feline time makes these moments all the more precious. 

People often call me the "owner" of my cats, but somewhere along the way, the lines between caregiver and loved one blurred. 

We became family. I strive to cherish these moments fully, capturing the extraordinary in the ordinary of our shared existence. 

This is the miraculous transformation that occurred when I welcomed Ddongddong, Kongkong, and Bonbon into my life. 

In my fourth solo exhibition and my first in Tokyo, titled "Bonbon is not a regular cat," my youngest cat, Bonbon, is depicted enjoying various activities: skiing, meditating, swimming, golfing, and fishing. Her siblings, Ddongddong and Kongkong, join in the fun. 

As the title suggests, Bonbon is no ordinary cat. Nor are Dongdong, who crossed the rainbow bridge two years ago, or Kongkong, the affectionate feline at my parents' home. 

This isn't mere bragging; every cat owner believes their cat is one-of-a-kind. It's only natural that even the smallest differences can feel extraordinary between those who love each other. 

I hope this sentiment reaches every corner of the world, inspiring people to see the specialness in all furry friends, making our world a little softer for both humans and animals.

イ·ジョンミン作家の作品には猫のドゥンドゥン、コンコン、ボンボンが主人公として登場しま す。 作品の中の彼らは暖かい日常と楽しい活動を享受し、作家の暖かい視線と愛情のこもった 観察を通じて躍動感あふれる姿で表現されます。 一つ目のドゥンドゥンは「オファドゥンドゥ ン」から名前を取り、二つ目のコンコンは「スカイコンコン」から、三つ目のボンボンはフラ ンス語で「飴」を意味する名前からインスピレーションを得ました。 アーティストは彼らに対 して「猫と私が主従関係ではなく家族になった」と話し、共にする時間が何より大切さを悟る ようになったと伝えます。

作品初期には作家と猫が一緒にいる姿がよく登場しましたが、時間が経つにつれて猫たちだけ の独立した世界を盛り込む方向に変化しました。 ドゥンドゥン、コンコン、ボンボンは、今や 作品の中で単なるペットではなく、主体的な存在として位置づけられています。 これは、猫を 単にペットとして描写した美術史的伝統とは一線を画します。 エジプトの女神バステットの象 徴として登場した猫から、朝鮮時代のキム·ドゥクシンとビョン·サンビョクの作品の中の猫、 そして印象派の画家、オーギュスト·ルノワールとエドワール·マネの絵において、猫は主に人 間との関係に存在しました。 一方、イジョンミンの作品で猫は完全に自分の世界を生きていく 主人公として現れます。

特に、イ·ジョンミンの作品は、ヘンリエッタ・ロナー=クニップとルイス·ウェインの作品と 興味深い文脈を共有します。 ヘンリエッタ・ロナー=クニップは猫の柔らかくて平和な日常を 描いたロマン主義画家で、ルイス·ウェインは愛猫「ピーター」を作品の中の中心に置き、人間 的でひょうきんな猫たちを描き出しました。 イ·ジョンミンの作品の中でゴルフをするボンボ ンはウェインのユーモラスな猫の絵を思い浮かばせます。

今回の展示では、ボンボンの新しい変化を盛り込んだ3Dトイ作品も披露します。「Concede」 と「Namaste」は立体的に具現されたボンボンを通じて平面作品を超えた新しい感覚を提供し ます。この作業は、3Dモデリングという精巧な技術を使用し、ボンボンの愉快な個性と感性を 一層生き生きと伝えます。

作家は「ボンボンは普通の猫ではない。」と言います。 ボンボンは絵を描くときにそばで見守 るパートナーとして、作家の世界と創作のインスピレーションをつなげてくれる存在です。 展 示を通じて観覧客は作家と猫たちが分かち合う懐かしい日常と暖かい感情を一緒に感じること ができるでしょう。

今回の展示は猫と人間、そして人生の大切さについて改めて考えさせられる意味のある機会に なるでしょう。

BONBON’s Extraordinary Scene

In the works of artist Lee Jung-min, her companion cats, Doongdoong, Kongkong, and Bonbon, take center stage as the main characters. 

These cats enjoy cozy everyday moments and engaging activities, vividly depicted through the artist’s warm perspective and affectionate observations. 

The first cat, Doongdoong, derives its name from the Korean phrase “Eoha Doongdoong” (a playful and affectionate term of endearment, used to describe someone cute), while Kongkong is named after the toy for jumping "Sky kongkong," and the youngest, Bonbon, takes its name from the french word for “candy.” The artist expresses, “My cats and I are not in a master-pet relationship; we have become a family,” emphasizing how their time together has become the most cherished part of her life.

In the early stages of her work, Lee frequently depicted herself alongside her cats, but over time, her focus shifted toward portraying the independent worlds of the cats themselves. Doongdoong, Kongkong, and Bonbon are no longer merely pets in her art but are established as autonomous entities. This sets her work apart from the traditional art historical portrayal of cats. Historically, cats have often been depicted in the context of their relationship with humans—from the Egyptian goddess ‘Bastet’ to depictions in the works of Joseon Dynasty artists Kim Deuk-sin and Byeon Sang-byeok, as well as Impressionist painters like Auguste Renoir and Édouard Manet. However, in Lee Jung-min’s works, cats are presented as protagonists who live fully in their own world, independent of human narratives.

Lee Jung-min’s work shares an intriguing context with the art of Henriëtte Ronner-Knip and Louis Wain. Ronner-Knip, a Romanticist painter, captured the soft and tranquil daily lives of cats, while Louis Wain placed his companion cat, Peter, at the center of his art, portraying anthropomorphic and whimsical feline characters. In Lee’s work, Bonbon playing golf evokes the humor of Wain’s cat illustrations.

This exhibition also introduces a new dimension with 3D toy creations featuring Bonbon. Pieces like Concede and Namaste bring Bonbon to life in three dimensions, offering a sensory experience that goes beyond traditional two-dimensional art. Using the sophisticated technology of 3D modeling, these works vividly convey Bonbon’s playful personality and emotions.

The artist describes Bonbon as “no ordinary cat.” Bonbon is a companion who stays by Lee’s side as she paints, serving as a bridge between her world and the inspiration behind her creations. 

Through the exhibition, viewers can share in the warmth and joy of the artist’s daily life with her cats.

This exhibition provides a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the bond between cats and humans, as well as the preciousness of life itself.

이정민 작가의 작업에는 반려묘 둥둥, 콩콩, 봉봉이 주인공으로 등장합니다. 작품 속 이들은 포근한 일상과 즐거운 활동을 누리며, 작가의 따뜻한 시선과 애정 어린 관찰을 통해 생동감 넘치는 모습으로 표현됩니다. 첫째 둥둥은 ‘어화 둥둥’에서 이름을 따왔고, 둘째 콩콩은 ‘스 카이 콩콩’에서, 막내 봉봉은 프랑스어로 ‘사탕’을 뜻하는 이름에서 영감을 얻었습니다. 작가 는 이들에 대해 “고양이와 내가 주종 관계가 아니라 가족이 되었다”라고 말하며, 함께하는 시간이 무엇보다 소중함을 깨닫게 되었다고 전합니다.

작업 초기에는 작가와 고양이가 함께하는 모습이 자주 등장했지만, 시간이 지나며 고양이들 만의 독립적인 세계를 담아내는 방향으로 변화했습니다. 

둥둥, 콩콩, 봉봉은 이제 작품 속에 서 단순히 반려동물이 아니라 주체적인 존재로 자리 잡습니다. 

이는 고양이를 단순히 반려 동물로 묘사했던 미술사적 전통과 차별화됩니다. 

이집트의 여신 바스테트의 상징으로 등장 했던 고양이부터, 조선시대 김득신과 변상벽의 작품 속 고양이, 그리고 인상파 화가 오귀스 트 르누아르와 에두아르 마네의 그림들에서 고양이는 주로 인간과의 관계 속에 존재했습니다. 

반면, 이정민의 작품에서 고양이는 온전히 자신의 세계를 살아가는 주인공으로 나타납니다.

특히 이정민의 작업은 헨리에트 로너 크니프와 루이스 웨인의 작품과 흥미로운 맥락을 공유 합니다. 

로너 크니프는 고양이의 부드럽고 평화로운 일상을 그린 낭만주의 화가로, 루이스 웨인은 반려묘 ‘피터’를 작품 속 중심에 두며 인간적이고 익살스러운 고양이들을 그려냈습니다. 

이정민의 작품 속에서 골프를 치는 봉봉이는 웨인의 유머러스한 고양이 그림을 떠오르게 합니다.

이번 전시에서는 봉봉이의 새로운 변화를 담은 3D 토이 작업도 선보입니다. <Concede>와 <Namaste>는 입체로 구현된 봉봉이를 통해 평면 작업을 넘어선 새로운 감각을 제공합니다. 

이 작업은 3D 모델링이라는 정교한 기술을 동원하여 봉봉이의 유쾌한 개성과 감성을 한층 생동감 있게 전달합니다.

작가는 “봉봉이는 보통 고양이가 아니다.”라고 말합니다. 봉봉이는 그림을 그릴 때 곁에서 지켜보는 동반자로서, 작가의 세계와 창작의 영감을 연결해 주는 존재입니다. 

전시를 통해 관람객은 작가와 고양이들이 나누는 정겨운 일상과 따뜻한 감정을 함께 느낄 수 있을 것입니다.

이번 전시는 고양이와 인간, 그리고 삶의 소중함에 대해 다시금 생각하게 하는 의미 있는 기회가 될 것입니다.
